Pets on Planes: Virgin Australia Extends in-Cabin Flight Trial

Pet owners, rejoice! Following a massively successful launch, Virgin Australia has officially announced an extension of its Pets in Cabin trial. Originally set to wrap up this month, the service will now continue until at least 30 June 2026.

The airline reported that demand for the service skyrocketed over the Christmas peak, with more than 300 cats and dogs taking to the skies. If you’re planning a trip between Victoria and Queensland, your furry co-pilot can now stay right by your side.

What’s New for 2026?

The biggest update for the new year is a win for feline fans. From 31 January 2026, cats will be permitted on all Pets in Cabin flight services. Previously, cats were restricted to specific routes, but now they can join their canine counterparts on all trial flights.

Current Eligible Routes:

  • Melbourne to/from Gold Coast
  • Melbourne to/from Sunshine Coast

Virgin Australia has also hinted that further expansion to other domestic routes is expected in the coming months.

How to Book and Points Info

For members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program, flying with your pet is a great way to use your points.

  • Point Cost: 18,600 Velocity Points per sector (per pet).
  • Cash Option: Available for booking via the Virgin Australia website.
  • Requirements: Pets must be small enough to fit comfortably in an airline-approved carrier under the seat in front of you.

“A Game Changer for Pet Parents”

The trial has received glowing reviews not just from travelers, but from industry experts. Celebrity vet Dr. Katrina Warren noted that the service has been a “game changer” for owners of small dogs and cats who previously had to choose between expensive pet sitters or putting their animals in the cargo hold.

Virgin Australia’s Chief Marketing Officer, Libby Minogue, emphasized that the feedback has been positive even from guests traveling without pets, proving that the sky is big enough for everyone.
