I recently got my hands-on with the YangWang U7 in Beijing, and this is a car that genuinely redefines luxury, technology, and value. Made by BYD’s high-end brand YangWang, the U7 is designed to go head-to-head with established giants like the Mercedes S-Class, the BMW 7 Series, and the Lexus LS. The most shocking part is the price: just 639,000 Chinese Yuan (approximately $133,000 Australian dollars). This price point makes the U7 an incredible value proposition for a vehicle packed with so much world-class technology and comfort.
Effortless Driving Comfort in Beijing
Driving the YangWang U7 around the streets of Beijing, even on a cold day, was an absolute joy. The car is effortless, and comfortable to drive. It absorbs every bump incredibly well under real-world conditions, providing a smooth experience that makes it seem like a dream to drive. The interior noise levels are fantastic, a testament to the luxurious environment. Even with 21-inch wheels, which typically make a ride less comfortable and noisier, the U7 handles everything nicely. For Australians familiar with our own terrible pothole-filled roads, this sedan’s ability to automatically adapt to rough surfaces would be an absolute dream.
Suspension Technology Explained: Like a Maglev Train
One of the key reasons the U7 is so comfortable is its unique suspension system. Under the bonnet, instead of a front trunk (frunk), you find a complex linear electric motor suspension system.
Unlike traditional hydraulic or air suspensions, this system uses technology similar to what is found on a maglev train. This allows the U7 to adapt to changing road conditions “super fast” and “super accurately” for each wheel. This system contributes to the world-class driving experience and is what allows the car to handle bumps and potholes with such ease.

What sets it apart is that it remains incredibly comfortable and luxurious while performing at this level, which is a departure from many other premium performance EVs.
The EREV Version and Noise Comparison
While our focus was on the full EV version, the U7 is also available as a plug-in hybrid version, known as an EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle). This variant features a 2-litre turbo boxer engine.
Remarkably, the noise difference between the EREV model and the full EV version is only one decibel. This achievement is considered “an incredible feat” given that the hybrid car has an engine and would otherwise be significantly noisier.

Luxury Inside and Out
The U7 is packed with high-tech and luxury features:
- Interior: The seats are electric in all positions, offering massage, heating, and ventilation functionality. The driver benefits from an augmented reality heads-up display projected onto the windscreen.
- Screens: The interior is screen-heavy, featuring a 23.8-inch digital display for the driver and another 23.8-inch digital display for the passenger.
- Rear Seats: The back seat is where the “magic happens”, featuring multiple digital displays, a rotatable touchscreen, and reclining seats for a “comfortable cruising position”. Rear passengers also enjoy seat massage, ventilation, and heating.
- Convenience: The car can automatically lower to one side when a door is opened, making it easier to get in and out. It even features a “repair mode” that allows the car to drive on three wheels if one is punctured, as the car balances itself to get the driver home safely.

Experience the World of Chinese Automotive Luxury
The YangWang U7 is a prime example of how Chinese manufacturers are democratising luxury by creating affordable, premium cars that don’t cost an arm and a leg.

Have been impressed since reading and seeing videos of this car. Am not a ‘lover’ of EV’s but I could be persuaded to change IF this car is as good as it sounds. Price in Australia would be a factor but if it comes in under $140k as suggested most certainly competes with the likes of Mercedes and BMW. Build quality would be an issue for me so I would need to actually see the car before deciding to purchase. Would be interested too in the hybrid version if that came to Australia. I think Chinese car brands are changing the landscape much like Japanese cars did in the 1980’s. The features found in these cars is insanely good in terms of not just power but comfort and luxury as well. I am sure we will see more cars like this on Australian roads in the future. The issue of ‘servicing’ of these vehicles ‘might’ be an issue, but I am sure BYD has this covered.
Absolutely agree. The hybrid version I think would be a hot seller here too!
